When Form 2290 is due

The tax year runs July 1 to June 30. Your deadline depends on the month the truck first went on the road in that year.

The annual deadline: August 31

If your truck was on the road in July, your 2290 for the year that started July 1 is due August 31. This is most owner-operators. It doesn't matter when your state registration renews; the IRS deadline is the same for everyone with a truck in July.

Bought a truck later in the year?

Then your deadline is the last day of the month after the month you first used it. The tax is prorated for the months left in the year, first month included.

If a date lands on a weekend or federal holiday, it moves to the next business day.

Missed it? File anyway. Penalties run 4.5% of the tax per month, up to five months, and the clock only stops when the IRS gets your return. See what late costs.

Paper vs e-file and the deadline

A paper return is on time if it's postmarked by the due date. But the IRS takes about six weeks to mail back your stamped Schedule 1, and the DMV won't register the truck without it. If plates are due, e-file: the stamp comes back in minutes.
