How you know you need one
- The DMV or IRP office says the VIN on your Schedule 1 doesn't match the title.
- You spot a typo: a 0 for an O, a swapped pair of digits, a missing character.
- Your carrier or leasing company kicked it back.
What a VIN correction is
It's a Form 2290 with the "VIN Correction" box checked, listing the correct VIN, plus a short explanation. No tax is due because you already paid on the wrong VIN. The IRS issues a new stamped Schedule 1 with the correct number.
What it isn't
If the truck itself changed, or the weight, or the first-used month, that's an amended return, not a VIN correction. See amendments.
